Hero Down: El Dorado County Deputy Brian Ishmael Murdered Wednesday Morning
El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Ishmael was fatally shot while responding to a call for service in a rural area.
El Dorado County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Ishmael was murdered in the line of duty on Wednesday morning as he responded to a call for service in South Lake Tahoe.
The incident occurred early on the morning of Oct. 23 as deputies were responding to a “call for service” in the area of Sand Ridge Road and Mt. Aukum Road, NBC News reported.
Deputy Ishmael, a four-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, had a citizen riding with him in the rural community southeast of Placerville when he responded to the call.
The sheriff’s department said that “an unknown number of people” opened fire on deputies and Deputy Ishmael was fatally struck, NBC News reported.
The sheriff’s department said that Deputy Ishmael’s citizen ride-along was wounded during the attack.
"It is with an extremely heavy heart that we announce that we lost a deputy in the line of duty this morning,” said a post on the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office’s official Facebook page. “El Dorado County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Ishmael was shot and killed after responding to a call for service in the area of Sand Ridge Road in Somerset, Ca. A ride-along was with Deputy Ishmael during the call and was injured during the shooting. Their condition is unknown at this time.”
Two suspects were taken into custody but the sheriff’s Facebook post said the “scene is still active.”
The suspects’ names have not yet been released.
Authorities are asking residents to shelter in place or avoid the area for the time being.
“We are stuck in our house because they are searching for other suspects. They have 2 in custody and Pg&e is turning the power off. This is down the street/road to our house Please pray for officer Ishmael, it’s a small town and pray for everyone’s safety,” @Jesus_porvida tweeted shortly after the deputy was shot.
It was unclear whether power was being turned off as part of the planned rolling blackouts throughout the state or whether the move had some tactical purpose.
Before joining the El Dorado Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Ishmael worked as an officer for the Placerville Police Department.
